Boxing gloves are an essential training and combat tool in the sport of boxing. Boxing gloves are used to blunt the damage a punch can potentially create. Boxing gloves are padded and weighed in ounces, they come in 5oz, 6oz, 8oz, 9oz, 12oz and 15oz styles. Boxing gloves can be made of leather or vinyl. They can also be laced up, use hook and loop closures or have rubber band straps.
In the beginning of boxing, fighters used bare fists to
do combat. These type of fights became bloody, deadly
and very short. Boxing gloves solved many of these
problems. Boxing gloves diminished the impact of each
punch, allowed the opponent to receive damage and fights
would last much longer. It would increase the
entertainment value of boxing. Boxing gloves also helped
to protect the fists of the fighters. Punches to the
head can be so powerful that fighter's fists or wrists
could be broken.
The name "Golden Gloves" was born in 1923. A sports editor named Arch Ward began an amateur boxing tournament to help the neighborhood kids and to promote the sport of boxing. The tournament's symbol was a tiny golden glove. This golden glove would go to the winner of each weight division.
The first Golden Gloves tournament was held in 1923 in Chicago Stadium, sponsored by Chicago Tribune. The tournament was a great success. The 2nd Golden Gloves tournament was held in 1928, due to some legal technicalities. Boxing would later be legalized in Illinois in 1928. The tournament would then have a 2nd life and flourish.
Originally the tournaments involved local fighters, but soon, fighters from all over the country would arrive to compete. Soon, newspapers from all over the country would sponsor the fights and then sponsor their own tournaments in their local cities.
